Essential Oils - Beyond "Alternative" Medicine

The clinical use of 100% pure essential oils in hospitals, hospices, and nursing homes is growing.
  • Harris Methodist Hospital in Ft. Worth has the only certified clinical aromatherapy program in North Texas (as of April 2008), were essential oils are used in conjunction with medical treatment. For example, a combination of bergamot and lavender is used to relieve tension and anxiety in patients, such as those with high-risk pregnancies.
  • At Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, essential oils are used in specific ways to obtain specific, measurable clinical outcomes. For example, lavender for anxiety and insect bites; ginger for nausea; peppermint for headache; rosemary for bursitis; and eucalyptus for colds.
  • The Washington Cancer Institute, part of Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, offers its patients suggestions on ways to use essential oils during their cancer care. (Click on the image to go to the hospital's website.)
  • According to Susan Coppola of Care Alternatives, a Cranford, NJ-based home-care provider in several states, aromatherapy is used in hospices and nursing homes throughout New Jersey. Ms. Coppola puts a blend of grape seed, lemon, frankincense, and juniper oil on different parts of the body to relax the patient and to moisturize the patient's dehydrated skin.
  • Charisse Gigli, an operating-room nurse at Barnert Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey, uses a blend of rose, bergamot, sandalwood and frankincense so the scent of the essential oils can reduce the stress of patients headed for surgery.
  • In addition to the above hospitals, here is a list of more hospitals in the U.S. that use essential oils. (Note: This list does not include all hospitals that include clinical aromatherapy as a treatment.)
